City teams visit Atlantis rental units for maintenance blitz

Councillor Carl Pophaim, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, visited Neptune Castle and Coral Place courts today, 20 February 2025, to accompany Public Housing maintenance teams as they complete maintenance and upgrade work at the City’s affordable Community Residential Units (CRUs) in Atlantis. All City services were present in the broader Atlantis area on the day, with teams offering support to residents at Saxonsea Community Hall, as well as going door-to-door. This forms part of Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis’s Service Blitz initiative, which is taking a range of services directly to residents in various parts of the city.

'We are excited to be in Atlantis today to see for ourselves the very real difference our maintenance work is making to residents’ lives. Our maintenance teams are making their way throughout the metro to perform essential upkeep on CRUs in various areas. Recently, we initiated a Public Housing campaign focused on enhancing safety and conducting maintenance in a respectful manner at our residential units. Our objective is to significantly improve the quality of life for our residents by creating safer, more comfortable living environments. The City is committed to investing over R1,2 billion in the coming years into CRUs across the metro, aiming to elevate the living standards of our residents,’ said Councillor Pophaim.

Work under way included:
• Carpentry - secure and repair gutters, fabrication and installations of new sink cupboards
• Bricklaying - repairs to existing concrete stairs, brick/block structures and installation of additional washing lines
• Welding - repairs to refuse huts and staircase hand rails
• Painting - painting of graffiti on flats and refuse huts, and replacing of broken window panes
• Electrical - repairs to area lighting on property, and repairs to faulty plug sockets and light switches in various units
• Plumbing - jetting of sewer lines on property and domestic plumbing issues in various units

‘Public Housing holds significant personal importance for me. It was heartening to witness our maintenance teams actively attending to service requests logged for Neptune Castle and Coral Place in Atlantis. These notifications require all trades in the construction field. As one of South Africa's largest landlords and a major provider of affordable housing, the City prioritises the well-being and comfort of our tenants. I genuinely enjoy the opportunity to visit different areas of the metro, where our residents call these units home, and connect with them. I encourage all our tenants to report any maintenance issues they encounter in their units. Public housing thrives as a collaborative effort, relying on the active engagement of all stakeholders. I want to express my gratitude to Team Cape Town for their dedication to creating stronger, better, and more comfortable homes for our residents,' said Councillor Pophaim.
